Need of E-Learning standards like SCORM, AICC?

Following standards brings efficiency and benefits in a general sense. Had there been no standards like Metric System, IUPAC, and TCP/IP etc., what would have been the shape of our knowledge. Guess! International standards in designing e-learning courseware sets interoperability, wherein, every component functions separately and independently irrespective of management system.

By adhering to standard such as Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM), Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC), World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Learning Technology Standards Committee (LTSC), Section 508 and many more are the means to enhance interoperability, accessibility, reusability and above all durability. Compared to conventional learning methods available which usually didn’t adhered to any set standards, lacked all the benefits which modern e-learning methodologies have.

Types of E-Learning Standards: Their Need

Listed below are some of the most popular e-learning standards, which have become an indispensable entity in the e-learning industry:

SCORM-It is a standard that provides an interface for packaging and managing of different learning objects into single entity.  The model comprises sharable content object (SCO) as the structural unit of a particular lesson or topic. In addition, SCORM has advantages over other standards in the sense that it freely compatible with various instructional design modules and LMS. This feature of SCORM lets subject expert design individual topics in which he/she considers to himself/herself thorough, which can later be made into single entity.

Section 508- This newly designed standard gives undue advantage to physically and mentally challenged individuals to gain access to web content. This section refers to United States government Federal Acquisition Regulation of 2001, which is refined form of earlier more comprehensive, the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

AICC- The standard offers an interlinking interface between CBT courses and computer-managed instruction (CMI) record keeping systems by using programming language. This helps in rapid manipulation and dispensation of data for perusal.
